Statement

The senses are wonderful tools that allow humans to guide themselves through the world. They are also gifts that artists explore and deconstruct to enrapture an audience and let them fully experience their art.

Charlie McAdow breaks down the invisible walls between the senses and explores how we interact with and absorb art. He does this through a variety of methods, including his deconstruction of the concept of lines and how something so visually simple makes up the basis of the world as we know it today, his fantasization of contemporary issues, or through his diffusions, perfumes, paintings, and many other ventures into olfactory, tangible, and visible mediums that allow viewers to interact with or wear his fragrant creations like another piece of clothing.

Charlie McAdow’s work begs the question of what is considered art, blurring the line between aesthetic and function incorporating established product forms typically reserved for or thought of as consumer goods. He taps into the universals of shared nostalgia, feelings, moments, and emotions we humans all experience, and uses his varied skills of different mediums and diverse interests to create art that is anything but mundane.

Bio

Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Charlie McAdow is a multidisciplinary artist who focuses on the intersection between the senses and art. McAdow was exposed to and grew a love for art from a very young age, having been first introduced during preschool, and ever since then, he has found himself drawing and creating whenever he can. During his upbringing, he was often entranced by multisensory experiences, especially art exhibitions that were created to include intractability and target multiple senses. McAdow has since spent his years creating pieces that reflect his deep appreciation of the senses. Currently, McAdow is a senior at the University of Rochester double majoring in Computer Science and Studio Arts. His work has been featured multiple times at the ASIS Gallery on campus, and he often delves into the connection between art and technology. McAdow plans on further schooling and entering the interactive media industry to inspire future artists and continue his exploration of the senses and the crossroads between technology and art.
